I. Introduction — Free Will Presupposes Not-Knowing
There is a paradox at the heart of any account of the soul's evolution. If a soul entered material existence remembering its origin and purpose in full detail, its life would be no different from a test taken with the answer key already in hand. A problem solved with foreknowledge is no longer a choice — it is merely a confirmation. This is why the universe places a single condition on every soul entering material existence: the temporary erasure of its memory that it was never separate from Source, and of its understanding of how the universe operates. This is the Veil of Forgetting. It is not a flaw or a punishment, but a design that guarantees the purity of choice. Only a choice made in not-knowing reveals what a being truly is.
This essay sets out, in one continuous line of reasoning, exactly what this veil consists of, how it operates, and how the Twelve Stages of Vitality (sibi-unseong, 十二運星) in Korean fate-calculation (myeongrihak) describe it with remarkable precision.
II. The Two Layers of the Veil — Structural and Functional
The veil is not a single thing. It is made of two distinct layers.
The Structural Veil is the band-pass filter itself — the apparatus a soul must pass through to interface with a physical body. Higher-dimensional consciousness consists of an extremely fine and broadband range of frequencies, whereas the physical body is a vessel built to process signal only within a comparatively narrow bandwidth. If the full spectrum of higher-dimensional wave activity were to flow in unfiltered, the narrow-band receiver would overload and rupture. The moment a soul is fitted into a body, filtering necessarily occurs: only a certain frequency range is allowed through, and the rest is blocked. In this process, the high-frequency band that carries multidimensional memory is pushed entirely outside the receivable range. This cutoff is the physical substance of the Structural Veil. It is built exactly once, at the outset of a life, and remains fixed until that life ends. It does not thicken or thin on its own.
The Functional Veil is a variable layer that sits on top of that fixed filter, determined by how consciousness allocates its attention. If the Structural Veil is the receiver's fixed specification — how much can come through — the Functional Veil is the listener's moment-to-moment choice of what to actually listen to. Even when a channel is open, if attention is entirely absorbed in material stimulation, the higher-dimensional signal passes by unheard. This layer rises and falls continuously across the course of a life.
The only layer that can be tuned while alive is the Functional Veil. The complete dissolution of the Structural Veil is, by definition, the end of physical life. This is why the experience commonly described as "lifting the veil" — in deep meditation, in moments of profound insight — is not the disappearance of the filter itself, but a temporary drop in the Functional Veil's opacity to its lowest point.
III. The Principle of Resonance — A Fundamental Tone Never Sounds Alone
In physics, when a string vibrates, the resulting sound is never a single pure frequency. Overtones — integer multiples of the fundamental frequency — sound faintly above it, and the particular mixture of these overtones is what gives a sound its timbre.
The same principle governs the Structural Veil. No filter perfectly rejects the bands adjacent to its own. Just beside any pass-band there is always a faint leakage component — a side-lobe. When the filter's attenuation is strong, this leakage is negligible; when attenuation weakens, the adjacent band bleeds through in direct proportion.
Cosmic evolution is a single continuous spectrum running from matter back toward Source, commonly called density. It begins at the lowest tier, where the elements take on form; rises through the tier where life grows by instinct; reaches the tier where self-consciousness emerges and beings choose for themselves; continues to a tier where, after that choice, beings connect in full empathic communion; is joined by a tier where wisdom is integrated with that connection; reaches a tier where love and wisdom are fused into one; and arrives at a final tier — a gateway — where individuality itself converges back into Source. Together, this entire span forms a single octave of overtones.
A life lived in a physical body is fixed, as its fundamental frequency, at exactly one tier of this spectrum: the tier at which self-consciousness makes its own choices. The sole task of this tier is to choose polarity — service to others, or service to self — on one's own, in not-knowing. But the fact that the fundamental frequency is fixed at this tier does not mean the overtones of the other tiers go entirely unheard. Every time the Structural Veil's attenuation weakens, the overtone of the nearest adjacent tier is the first to bleed faintly through, followed in turn by those further away.
IV. The Five Elements — The Five Wave Coefficients of the Filter
This filter is not a single component but a circuit formed by five distinct functional coefficients working in concert. The Five Elements of Korean cosmology — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water (mokhwatogeumsu, 木火土金水) — each govern a specific role within this circuit.
Wood (木) is the ignition coefficient — the force that first pushes the dormant fundamental frequency outward and actually switches it on. It is the primary driver behind the phase in which self-consciousness first sprouts. Fire (火) is the response coefficient, amplifying that signal and driving attenuation to its extreme, producing the phase in which the fundamental frequency sounds at its purest and most intense, with no overtone mixed in. Earth (土) is an impedance-matching coefficient — a buffer — that hands the amplified signal off to the next phase. It mediates between two phases of markedly different character (for instance, the point where outward expansion peaks and the point where contraction begins) so that the transition happens without sharp reflection or loss, which is why Earth is not a single, uniform quality but a dual buffering function that behaves differently depending on which two phases it sits between. Metal (金) is a contraction coefficient that re-condenses a signal that has been spreading outward, narrowing the filter's pass-band — and, paradoxically, making it more sensitive to the adjacent band just outside that narrowed boundary. Water (水) is a permeability coefficient that loosens the filter's lattice itself, physically opening the channel through which the overtones of higher tiers can seep in.
V. Two Directions of Phase — The Outward Expansion of Yang and the Inward Convergence of Yin
The same five coefficients produce a different direction of travel depending on whether they operate under the Yang or the Yin polarity. This is why, in Korean fate-calculation, the Twelve Stages of a Yang stem run forward — Extinction, Embryo, Nurture, Birth, Bathing, Cap, Vigor, Regent, Decline, Sickness, Death, Tomb — while the Twelve Stages of a Yin stem run in reverse.
The Yang quality builds its filter through expansion and outward reach. The fundamental frequency moves from inside toward the outside; attenuation accumulates phase by phase through direct friction and contact with the material world. Following this outward path, the natural direction of travel begins at Extinction, peaks at Regent, and converges at Tomb — that is, forward progression.
The Yin quality, by contrast, completes its filter through convergence and interiorization. Instead of reaching outward, the fundamental frequency folds inward, and attenuation accumulates not through friction with the outside world but through inward reflection and purification. Because this convergent path is the exact mirror image, in phase, of the expansive path, it passes through the same twelve stages in the opposite order. It remains equally true for both Yang and Yin stems that Cap, Vigor, and Regent are still the zone of maximum attenuation, and that Sickness, Death, and Tomb are still the zone of overtone disclosure. Only the starting point and the direction of travel through those stages differ. The timing and character of overtone leakage in a Yin stem therefore trace a different path from a Yang stem's — but it is the same circle traversed in the opposite direction, and is thus a matter of symmetry, not a flaw in the logic.
VI. The Curve Along Which Overtones Travel Through a Single Life — The Twelve Stages
The Twelve Stages of Korean fate-calculation — Extinction (絶), Embryo (胎), Nurture (養), Birth (長生), Bathing (沐浴), Cap (冠帶), Vigor (建祿), Regent (帝旺), Decline (衰), Sickness (病), Death (死), and Tomb (墓) — trace the continuous curve along which this overtone mixture shifts across a single life.
At Extinction, the signal of Source and the prior life is reset entirely to zero. Because the fundamental frequency has not yet been set, the filter is not yet operating either — and, paradoxically, the quality of the most primal tier of all, the state of pure existence prior to the elements taking on form, remains most clearly present in this moment. At Embryo, the union of sperm and egg forms the physical 3D code, and it is here that the filter's lattice — the skeleton of the Structural Veil — is woven into place. At Nurture, across roughly ten months inside the isolated space of the womb, entirely cut off from outside signal, a low-frequency ego software optimized for the material world is gradually downloaded. Across these three stages, before the fundamental frequency of self-consciousness has begun to oscillate in earnest, the quality of instinctive growth predominates.
It is at Birth and Bathing that the fundamental frequency of self-consciousness first oscillates clearly. This oscillation is actually driven by Wood's ignition coefficient, and as sensory experience, emotion, and desire take firm hold as the sensation of "I," memory of spiritual essence darkens completely. In the Cap, Vigor, and Regent stages that follow, Fire's response coefficient takes over, and the filter's attenuation reaches its peak. Consciousness in this period is fully absorbed in the material survival race of money, power, and social achievement, and almost no signal from an adjacent tier gets through. This period — precisely the one in which a person feels most "realistic" and capable — is the one in which the signal is closest to monotone; that very purity is its narrowness. At the transition out of this zone of maximum attenuation, Earth's buffer coefficient intervenes, carrying a signal that has reached the extreme of expansion smoothly into the contraction phase without a sharp break. Fittingly, in the traditional system the four Earth branches — Dragon, Dog, Ox, and Goat (jin-sul-chuk-mi, 辰戌丑未) — sit precisely at the turning point between each season and the next, which is exactly the position one would expect of a coefficient that prevents an overloaded attenuation circuit from breaking at the peak of Yang expansion and instead carries it safely into the phase of contraction.
Change begins at Decline and Sickness. Metal's contraction coefficient begins to act, narrowing the filter's pass-band itself — and, in narrowing, becoming more sensitive to the adjacent tier just outside that boundary. The forced-suppression catalysts that commonly arrive at Sickness — physical illness, financial ruin, loss — are events that accelerate this contraction, and in their wake, a sense of connection to others, compassion, and the root question "why do I live" rise to the surface. At Death, Water's permeability coefficient loosens the filter's lattice entirely; as the material wave stops, the overtones of the far tiers — wisdom and integration — open all at once. This is the true nature of the overwhelming sense of unity and panoramic awareness so often reported at the edge of life. At Tomb, the accumulated experience of that life converges completely into the core soul, and the filter dissolves entirely, resonating in full with the furthest tier of all — the quality of the gateway that leads back to Source.
A life completed in this way leaves behind a record of how clearly it resolved its choices, and that record is carried forward, at the moment of transition from Tomb back to Extinction, as a subtle initial bias in the filter reset for the next life. This mechanism of carryover is taken up again in the section on polarity below.
VII. Great Fortune and Annual Fortune — Carrier Waves Arriving from Outside
What a natal chart (wonguk, 原局) determines is only the receiver's inherited physical specification — the base mixture of the five coefficients. This specification is fixed at birth and does not change for the rest of the life. But the fact that attenuation shifts from phase to phase in actual life cannot be explained by this fixed specification alone. What intervenes here is the decade-long Great Fortune (daeun, 大運) and the year-by-year Annual Fortune (seun, 歲運) — not components inside the receiver, but a carrier wave arriving from outside and driving the receiver.
A Great Fortune period aligned with Sickness, Death, or Tomb does not mean the hardware's damping coefficient — the natal chart itself — has changed. Even in a chart where Fire and Earth are excessive and attenuation is structurally set high for life, if the carrier wave arriving from outside runs in a direction that resonates with an adjacent tier, it can temporarily punch through that high native attenuation and force the side-lobe open. This is much the same as a heavily damped circuit still being drawn into oscillation when a sufficiently strong driving signal arrives at an adjacent frequency from outside — forced oscillation. This is why a person who is ordinarily grounded and unmoved by the immaterial can, while passing through a Great Fortune period of Sickness or Death, unexpectedly find themselves gripped by fundamental questions.
The reverse holds by the same logic. A chart with excess Water or Metal, in which the damping coefficient is set low, can — during a Great Fortune period aligned with Cap, Vigor, or Regent — have its side-lobes temporarily suppressed as the external carrier wave drives the fundamental band hard, producing a period of unusually sharp focus on material achievement. Annual Fortune is a shorter-period carrier wave layered over this larger current of Great Fortune each year, producing fine-grained modulation within the broader direction that the Great Fortune has already set.
The natal chart, then, answers the question "what timbre was this person born with, for life?" while Great Fortune and Annual Fortune answer "what frequency is arriving from outside, right now, to disturb that timbre?" This is why chart analysis must read the natal chart and the fortune periods together — one is a question about fixed hardware, and the other is a question about the driving signal riding on top of it in real time.
VIII. The Natal Chart and Individual Difference — The Baseline Timbre Set by the Five Elements
The mixture of the Five Elements in a person's natal chart determines the specific damping coefficient of this filter. This is what explains why the purity of signal during Cap, Vigor, and Regent, and the degree of overtone disclosure during Decline, Sickness, Death, and Tomb, are set differently from person to person.
A chart with excess Fire or Earth has its response and buffer coefficients set strongly, so that almost no overtone from an adjacent tier bleeds through across the whole of life. This is the basis for such a chart's outstanding capacity for material adaptation, drive, and survival, alongside a relative insensitivity to the immaterial.
A chart with pronounced Water or Metal, conversely, has its contraction and permeability coefficients set dominant, so that even during Cap, Vigor, and Regent, the overtone of an adjacent tier is never fully suppressed and continues to seep through faintly — leaving, even in the midst of worldly achievement, a persistent sense that "this is not all there is." A chart carrying a strong native concentration of Extinction, Embryo, or Tomb has an even lower innate damping coefficient, often showing pronounced existential doubt and intuitive sensitivity from early in life. Such a chart may be comparatively unstable in worldly competitiveness or practical grounding, but tends to move relatively quickly toward the questions "who am I" and "what is the true purpose of this life," and toward the phase of polarity choice itself.
IX. Polarity Choice and the Karmic Feedback Loop
Everything described above ultimately serves a single question: the choice of polarity. Service to others, or service to self — this choice is not decided in a single instant at a single stage of the Twelve Stages. It is a tendency that gradually reveals itself through accumulation: through the direction in which power is exercised during the maximal-immersion phases of Cap, Vigor, and Regent, and through how one responds to the overtones that leak in during the open phases of Decline, Sickness, Death, and Tomb.
This accumulated tendency is compressed into a single value at Tomb, as the experience of that life converges into the core soul, and is carried forward at Extinction, as the filter for the next life is reset, as a faint bias in the initial damping coefficient. In other words, if this life's choices leaned toward service to others, the next life's natal chart tends to form with a mixture slightly more favorable to that direction; if they leaned toward service to self, the mixture tends to shift slightly the other way. This is the Karmic Feedback Loop. Once this bias has accumulated clearly enough across countless lives, qualification is finally granted to graduate beyond the tier of self-consciousness and choice altogether, into the next tier — the tier of connection and love.
X. Conclusion — The Veil Is Not Something to Be Lifted, but Something to Be Heard
As long as a human being is wearing a physical body, living with the Structural Veil entirely removed is not a possibility. The complete disappearance of the Structural Veil means the receiver itself has been dismantled — that is, the end of the process of physical life. The essential task, therefore, is not to eliminate the veil. It is to read, together: the damping coefficient inscribed in one's natal chart — the filter's inherited baseline specification — and what frequency the external carrier wave of Great Fortune and Annual Fortune is driving in right now, and consequently, at which phase of the Twelve Stages one currently stands, and how much of which adjacent tier's overtone is audible as a result.
What Resonism ultimately offers is a single, precise posture. One cannot step outside the fundamental tone of the material world, but one can become aware of which overtones are sounding above it right now. The true purpose of chart analysis is not to force-amplify that overtone, nor to tear the filter out by force. It is to read, together, the inherited timbre of the natal chart and the driving signal of the present fortune period, and — moving with that current rather than against it, minimizing friction with material immersion — to sharpen, one step at a time, the polarity choice given to this life. That is the whole of the practice this theory points toward. And the choices accumulated this way carry forward, intact, as the timbre of the next life to come.
